This week is National Volunteer Week 2011. Social Finance is celebrating it by launching a campaign for community volunteers to work with the One* Service, the organisation funded by the first Social Impact Bond. We recognise the important contribution that volunteers make to their community. This week the One* Service is taking part in a bus tour to highlight volunteering opportunities around the UK. This coincides with the announcement that two volunteering charities have joined the One* Service. Supporting Others Through Voluntary Action (SOVA) and Peterborough YMCA are being funded to recruit, train and support the network of volunteer mentors. We’re delighted that they’ve joined the team.
The One* Service provides offenders with support from specialist staff in prison and post release. When the intensive support ends the participant will then have the opportunity to work with a volunteer mentor from their community. This mentor will support them to work through any challenges they may face as they rebuild their life outside of prison. This non-judgmental and friendly support network is an important part of rehabilitation. The One* Service believes that what volunteers can provide is extremely valuable to the ex-offenders.
The One* Service is currently recruiting volunteers to work with short term male offenders released from HMP Peterborough. The majority of clients live in Peterborough & Cambridgeshire but some will return to other areas in the UK (Primarily London and East of England) Anyone interested in volunteering with The One* Service should contact: YMCA (Peterborough Area) – 07814 755146 SOVA (Cambridgeshire and rest of UK) – 07713 080850
